It’s One Helluva Hungover Switzerland..
Most people probably have a general view of Switzerland as a quiet, introverted, calm and methodical country where people don’t really enjoy themselves that much. I’ve learnt from the three
years living here that there is a semblance of truth in that assessment but it is very superficial. The Swiss like to party whenever they can and there are parties in pretty much every village,
town or city all year round for all sorts of occasions, some small with just a few people and some huge festivities like Fasnacht (for info on the carnival and cliques) and the August 1st national holiday. What is often the common thread with these events is the Swiss desire to enjoy themselves with
their friends be that in the local football club or band or community group. Therefore, yesterday every little club and clique (the Swiss name for all the little groups, often revolving around
the band that plays at Fasnacht) was full to the brim for the football.
The Swiss also (as do the Germans) like a beer or six and so this morning most of the world here has woken up a little worse for wear but with a big grin on all their faces. Not only have they
beaten the reigning European Champions but they did without two of their biggest stars, their leading goalscorer Frei and West Ham
player Behrami. Frei could be back for the Chile game but Hitzfeld
may not risk him now and keep him for the game against Honduras which could settle their progress to the next round. We shall see. There is less good news on Senderos as he will miss at least two games following
his injury against the Spanish.
Meanwhile the first part of the fixture list for the Premier League has been
announced and all we need to know now is when the TV companies decide on which games they will be showing and at what time. Then I may be able to start the process of booking flights for
2010/11 season!
