Spurs fans left fuming – Villa laughing
I have to start by saying the texts and messages I have received from some of my friends who are Spurs fans yesterday has made a hilarious read. Now I accept that Spurs were much the better team
for large spells of that game – but if you sum it up as defence vs attack then put simply the Villa defence won that battle. Just as when they drew with Birmingham recently Spurs have a
frustrating knack of not being able to kill off games, and their record against the clubs above them bares out the cold hard fact that Defoe and co – haven’t turned on the style against the teams
that count.
That’s said, i am envious of their attacking options, squad and they way they play overall and I have nothing against their fans either – just it was inevitable that their frustrations boiled
over yesterday.
Hit it long or two the wings – again and again and again
I am increasingly frustrated as to why Villa seem to be playing with so little central midfield play and way too many long balls (nothing has changed on that front since last year really – it was
problem then and is now). We sold/loaned players in the transfer window but brought no-one in to try and add a bit of creative edge in midfield or some more guns upfront. Ultimately that will
probably destroy our chances of a top 4 finish as I just don’t think we will score enough goals to get there.
Carew vs Delfouneso
Carew really has been mostly a pale shadow of himself this season, recent injuries haven’t helped but he was totally toothless against Spurs. Heskey has done ok but will never get the goals we
need and Gabby blows hot and cold although he brings a lot more than just goals to the team (but we need the goals). Everytime I have seen Delf play he has looked sharp and capable, but with MONs
static sub policy he never gets on the pitch and this has to change and NOW.
Milner CM
I am in no way going to criticise the talisman of the team but does anyone else feel that he floats wide and in areas of the pitch that surely Downing, Gabby and Ash should have covered? We’ve
seen him play killer balls into the penalty area since he switched to central midfield and we need much more of that, or else we need Petrov to realise that he can run and pass forward if he
chooses to rather than just backwards and sideways. Also what is the point of Downing? Great player but for some reason he just doesn’t seem to contribute much presently? I also want to see more
of what Delph can do – surely he must be a better option than bringing on Sidwell who in my opinion is a total waste of space.
Bottom line is that long balls and constant counter attacking wing play won’t win us a Champion’s league spot, MON needs to take a few gambles and freshen our side up a bit as we are just too
predictable of late. Whilst we have the best goal keeper in the country on this form and with Dunne probably the best defender – I have no idea why we didn’t go for Robbie Keane or someone like
that to bolster our one dimensional attack???
