The Capello Mistake
As of February 5, 2010, the England National Team does not have a captain. Earlier today, Fabio Capello decided to remove John Terry’s status of “Captain of England”. I believe this decision
will have tremendous, and disastrous effects.
The effects will be soon and later. They will be negative, and will hurt both England and Capello. Terry, on the other hand, will not be damaged in any way, like the Burnley game showed.
Whoever comes next for England’s captain will not be able to match Terry’s capabilities in leading the team. It’s true, and I will admit, that I am a Chelsea fan, as well as a Terry supporter.
When it comes to Capello, I like him too. But now, things have changed. I see Capello as a negative aspect for England, unlike before. A decision like this could backfire completely, and turn
into a mistake that will haunt him for a long time. England still have Terry on their line-up, though the team will never be the same. Ferdinand will never be able to lead the team in any way,
and the only two that really could would be Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard, though they still couldn’t do the trick. The fact that a Man United player could captain England’s greatest
disturbs me, and could very well ruin everything that they have to offer.
England seemed like a team with good chances in the World Cup. For many, the last few weeks have just shown that they don’t have what it takes to conquer others in the forthcoming finals. The
drama has broken the morale of English players, leading to Man City players wearing shirts with “Team Bridge” on them. Terry will still play, though he will be quiet, and not produce the
enthusiasm and support that the others need from him. It has all been broken, and Capello will end his years of manager with a terrible decision. If Terry had kept his captaincy, people might
have still criticized him, though the worst that could happen would be Wayne Bridge’s withdrawal (which would be better for England overall). Capello has doomed England ahead of the World Cup.
In addition, he has broken himself, and has killed his chances of staying as Manager after the finals. Even if he choses to leave, his manager life will be done, and his hard work will be
forgotten. Terry will stay as he is, as the Best defender that England and Chelsea have produced, and in the world.
